Totally Deep Backcountry Skiing Podcast
On Episode 129 of Totally Deep Podcast, Doug Stenclik and Randy Young of www.cripplecreekbc.com bring you the lowdown on the world of uphill and backcountry skiing and boarding. Gear, technique, fashion, jargon, guests, and assorted spray from folks who know how to earn it in the backcountry. The world's best backcountry skiing podcast.

From two wheels and high-tech frames to sliding on skins uphill, Randy and Doug discuss the season among us: Transition season. They’ll set the stage as Doug recounts his most excellent trip to Lake Placid, where he witnessed Christopher Blevins secure the Men’s Elite UCI XCO & XCC World Cup Overall Wins.

The banter pivots hard to the snow falling in the high hills and the gear they’re eyeing this season. Some key points are made. Here’s what is clear: Tariffs will impact pricing, and brands like Pomocoa, Dynafit, ATK, and Fischer may have some sweet gear to round out your backcountry gear.

On Episode 129 of the Totally Deep Podcast:

  1. The snow falls, and Doug takes a spill.
  2. Questioning performance and bike socks might be the difference.
  3. The UCI MTB World Cup in Lake Placid.
  4. UCI MTB course technical features.
  5. Tariffs and pricing.
  6. The ATK HY Free binding and its merits.
  7. Pomoca's Expedition skins could make the uphills fly by.
  8. Dynafit's Blacklight 2.0 gets some high praise.
  9.  Why are outdoor gear shops under financial stress?
  10. Focusing on solutions to keep your local shop afloat.

Doug returns from a trip to Dynafit's headquarters in Germany and a visit to Oberalp's headquarters in Italy. We'll hear about the many ups and downs of riding in the Alps and Dolomites, and how the mountain culture in these regions has adopted the E-bike ethos. It's a debate that is still settling in the places Doug and Randy call home.

The banter about bikes evolves into the rarefied realm of UCI World Champs and the upcoming World Cup on U.S. soil, based in Lake Placid. As the snow trickles down here and there in Colorado, it is also a time to recall how to be safe out there.

Outside of the Roaring Fork Valley, you might know of John Gaston as that dude from out of town who came into your local scene, under the radar, and cleaned up. He's been doing as much in the mountain bike and skimo racing scenes for well over a decade at all levels of sport.

Sufferfest accolades include two podiums at the Leadville 100 and skimo stats that make the head spin: 13 skimo national championships and a most recent highlight placing 21st in the ISMF World Champs vertical race. In his spare time, along with a growing family, Gaston helps run Strafe outerwear.

What we get on episode 127 is Gaston amped up. There are opinions on the skimo scene and gravel, as well as which bike you should or shouldn't take on your next gravel ride. Spoiler alert: Gaston is fond of svellte but downhill-capable XC mountain bikes, as they are do-it-all and do-it-well steeds.

On Episode 127 of the Totally Deep Podcast:

  1. Has Gaston ever lost a race?
  2. The skimo scene and the Olympics.
  3. Edurance v. speed efforts.
  4. Covering skimo for growing the sport.
  5. Grinding through Leadville.
  6. The 6-hour barrier.
  7. The bike check.
  8. Gravel bikes? Do youn need one?
  9. Doug's latest bike race and crash and burn 12 miles in.

This 125th episode features the Roaring Fork Valley's Mike Marolt. His name is synonymous with the rise of high-altitude ski mountaineering in the United States. Along with his twin brother Steve and friend Jim Gile, he climbed and skied Shishpangma in 2000. They became the first from the U.S. to descend an 8,000-meter peak on skis.

Mike discusses his latest climb-to-ski ambitions in South America and his book, Shishapangma, Skiing the Highline: The Account of the First American Ski Descent from an 8000-Meter Peak, released last year.

Almost happy spring and be safe out there.

Pete Swenson is our guest, and he's here to talk straight about the ski mountaineering racing scene.

Swenson wears many hats, but for the Lycra set, he's most well-known for starting the COSMIC race series here in Colorado. Beyond his legacy of speed, Swenson has been a forthright advocate for the racing scene. And as you'll hear on the episode, he's thought quite a bit about how to sustainably grow the sport and make it a more viable option for recreational fitness skiers and those keen on besting a Strava segment.

As we move into an Olympic year where ski mountaineering will be featured, Doug, Randy, and Swenson dream of bigger things to come, which you'll hear about on Episode 124.

On Episode 123 of Totally Deep Podcast, Doug Stenclik and Randy Young of www.cripplecreekbc.com bring you the lowdown on the world of uphill and backcountry skiing and boarding. Gear, technique, fashion, jargon, guests, and assorted spray from folks who know how to earn it in the backcountry. The world's best backcountry skiing podcast.

Doug takes a winter reprieve and heads south, way-way south, for some sunshine, pedaling, and horseriding—giddy up. Chile is today's primary destination. With a family trip planned to Chilean Patagonia, our resident fun hog, Doug, sheds light on the excellence and adventure of the region's freeform and manicured mountain bike riding. There's fjords and alpine and all the in-between to take in. But really, you came for the skiing or the potential for skiing. Although it's high summer in Chile, Doug takes a few strolls in the saddle and convinces himself that his next ski adventure should include wrangling horses, packing them up with a not-so-light load, and heading for the hills for some turn-making.

Horse packing may be Doug's new thing, CCBC will not be carrying horse and tackle supplies anytime soon.

On Episode 123 of the Totally Deep Podcast:

  1. Off to Patagonia, not Arizona.
  2. Traveling with a bike.
  3. The how-to get your bike under 50-pound trick.
  4. "I rode some serious horses."
  5. The outdoor rec economy in this Chilean region.
  6. Riding with the locals.
  7. The potential to backcountry ski. (Sometimes with horses.)
  8. Randy goes skinning.
  9. Snow in Austin!
  10. Rallying, despite the jet lag, to go ski.
