The wheelhouse of Totally Deep expands in this episode when Doug and Randy interview Mark Grotjahn, a noted American artist who also happens to backcountry ski. Or, maybe, for TDP purposes, we have a backcountry skier who happens to be an artist. No matter, Grothjahn brings a unique and welcome perspective to the ski scene that embodies his broad vision of seeing the world. Gagosian.com writes about his art, "Grotjahn combines gesture and geometry with abstraction and figuration in visually dynamic paintings, sculptures, and works on paper. Each of his series reflects a range of art-historical influences and unfolds in almost obsessive permutations."

But the story doesn't end there. Grotjahn, a powder snow lover, also has a soft spot for DPS skis. More on that in a bit.

Recently, Grtotjahn opened an exhibit titled Backcountry. "In Backcountry, he continues to draw inspiration from rural landscapes and his ski touring and fly-fishing adventures in the backcountry of western Colorado," writes Gagosian.com. Along with the exhibit, Cripple Creek Backcountry, Grotjahn, and DPS released a limited edition series of skis featuring Grotjahn's art on the topsheets: the new ski is known as the Mark Grotjahn DPS 50 Kitchens Ski.

This also marks the release of a new DPS powder ski, the Kaizen 112.

Cody Townsend cements himself into the ski mountaineering lore (only you can define ski mountaineering) as his quest to ski The Fifty continues. Cody also chats about the season at hand and his progress with the project, and as it comes down to spicier and logistically more complex lines, how the Fifty Project could extend several years out.

Episode 107 features Blase Reardon, the Director of the Flathead Avalanche Center in Northwest Montana. Reardon has deep experience in the avalanche forecasting realm, having worked at the Sawtooth Avalanche Center and the Colorado Avalanche Information Center. Dialing up the TDP time machine, Reardon first appeared on the podcast in 2015, where they discussed such things as the STFU skintrack. You can find that episode here. 

A highlight of episode 107 isn't a breakdown of the snow science but a real-deal unpacking of our complex decision-making processes in the backcountry. The season, not unlike many others, has been rife with unstable snowpacks in some regions and the uneasy quest to find safe, stable, and carefree skiing. With this in mind, Doug and Blase discuss their time together in Carbondale as Doug's local crew tries to stack the deck in their favor knowing that it is still house rules in avalanche terrain.
